The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Hand and Upper Extremity Section specializes in the research, education, diagnosis, and treatment of a spectrum of disorders and injuries of the upper extremity including the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder.

We treat common conditions such as osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome as well as complex cases such as congenital anomalies and reattachment of fingers. Our team members subspecialize in all aspects of hand surgery ranging from microsurgery and brachial plexus to pediatric hand and complex wrist reconstruction. We work closely with hand therapists, rheumatologists, and athletic trainers to provide comprehensive outstanding clinical care to our patients.

Our section is actively involved in research consistently looking to improve the patient experience through existing and new procedures related to the specialty. Providing educational opportunities to our residents and fellows through research and clinical experience is also a priority. To further our commitment to education, we not only offer high-quality training to our residents in hand and upper extremity orthopaedic surgery, but we also offer an ACGME-accredited hand and upper extremity fellowship.
