The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Trauma Section is comprised of fellowship-trained orthopaedic trauma surgeons.
Our team is educated in the latest techniques, offer unmatched educational opportunities to trainees, and are actively involved in research. Our faculty are trained in the latest techniques of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis, intramedullary nailing, or external fixation (Ilizarov/Taylor Spatial Frame) and specialize in treating complex and simple fractures of the shoulder, elbow, hip (fragility fractures), acetabulum, pelvis, knee, ankle, and foot. Their training also enables them to tackle problems such as fractures that haven't healed and fractures that have healed in a poor position.
Our Trauma Section faculty are actively engaged in both clinical and laboratory research projects, with research efforts directed at improving patient care and safety. Projects are funded by a host of different agencies including federal, local, and industry.
The section also offers an orthopaedic surgery trauma fellowship. Based out of Alabama's only ACS-certified Level I Trauma Center, this training program offers fellows a broad experience with pelvic/acetabular fracture, periarticular reconstruction, and management of poly-traumatized patients. Working with trauma-trained surgeons, fellows have ample opportunity to evaluate and treat patients and enjoy a process of graduated autonomy in both the operating room and the clinic.
