On May 31, 2020 Devin E. Eckhoff, M.D. will officially depart the UAB Department of Surgery after more than 25 years of service. He will join the faculty of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as the Transplant Institute director, a professor and the Peter Medawar Endowed Chair of Transplantation.

More than 1,200 interns, residents and fellows train in every medical specialty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and our regional campuses in Montgomery, Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, and in our program in Selma.

Four UAB medical students were named winners of the Department of Surgery’s annual medical student awards at the 2020 School of Medicine Birmingham Campus Awards ceremony on Friday, May 15. Among those students, two of them will soon join the department as general surgery residents after matching into the program in March.

UAB General Surgery Resident Connie Shao, M.D. was one of six resident doctors across the country to receive an American College of Surgeons (ACS) Resident Research Scholarship. The two-year scholarship funds the research of the recipient and may be used for salary or stipend, research materials and travel related to the research.

May is National Trauma Awareness Month, and there are many ways that the UAB Department of Surgery and Division of Acute Care Surgery are recognizing the month in 2020. Specifically, the department is focusing on sharing information about fall risks, Stop the Bleed programs and distractions that can lead to trauma.

UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Lauren Tanner, M.D., FACS, has been named Chief of the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) Service within the Division of Acute Care Surgery in the UAB Department of Surgery. In 2019, Tanner was named director of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and continues to serve as the co-director of the UAB Women in Surgery Program.

Several faculty published “Dermal Autografts in Breast Reconstruction: A Review of Past and Current Trends,” a review that summarizes key studies that highlight the feasibility of using dermal autografts versus acellular dermalmatrix (ADM) in breast reconstruction.

Match Day 2020 ushered in a new group of surgery residents, while saying goodbye to others who will soon leave UAB for different programs across the country. UAB students will continue their medical educations at 82 institutions across 30 states.

UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Graeme McFarland, M.D., was awarded $10,000 in funding through the UAB Faculty Development Grant Program (FDGP). McFarland also serves as the co-director of the UAB Advanced Limb Preservation Clinic and Associate Director of the General Surgery Residency Program.

Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Danielle Sutzko, M.D., M.S., and Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy Adam Beck, M.D., published their review “Big Data in Vascular Surgery: Registries, International Collaboration and Future Directions” in the Journal of Internal Medicine.

The UAB Department of Surgery is highlighting faculty, residents and staff who have an intriguing out-of-the-office hobby. The goal of the series is to connect individuals across the department by helping illuminate out-of-the-office moments and achievements.

This year, the annual Department of Surgery Resident Research Day will look a bit different, but the mission of supporting the research efforts of residents remains the same.
