University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing first-year PhD student and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholar Bailey Hendricks, BSN, RN, is a recipient of the Oncology Nursing Foundation Doctoral Research Scholarship, reserved for registered nurses pursuing research doctoral degrees who are interested in oncology nursing.
Hendricks‘ doctoral dissertation is planned to focus on the psychosocial impact of parentification in caregiving children of cancer patients.
“I am incredibly grateful to have been selected for this scholarship,” Hendricks said. “I look forward to putting this support to good use as I continue pursing my PhD in Nursing.”
Hendricks also recently received the “Best of the Best” Poster Award at the American Psychosocial Oncology Conference held February 28 – March 2, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. Her poster focused on evaluating an evidence-based program, Think Well, addressing cognitive changes in Alabama breast cancer survivors.
“I am very thankful to have received these awards, especially so early on in my program. I could not have done it without the support and mentorship I received through the UAB School of Nursing, as well as the help and encouragement of the Think Well team,” Hendricks said.
Hendricks earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from the UAB School of Nursing in 2018. While she was in the undergraduate Nursing Honors Program, she worked with the late Dr. Karen Meneses on research projects in the young breast cancer survivor population.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to honor my late mentor, Dr. Karen Meneses, by presenting the culmination of the work she began on Think Well years ago.”
