University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Assistant Professor Shena Gazaway, PhD, RN, is one of three investigators awarded 2022 Palliative Care Research Cooperative (PCRC) pilot program grants. The PCRC focuses on end-of-life and palliative care research.
Gazaway’s grant, “Exploring the Acceptability of Stakeholder Enhanced Intervention to Improve Palliative Decision Partnership of Chronic Kidney Disease Dyads,” is a pilot study to create a patient component to a decision support training intervention in development for family caregivers.
“To receive this funding from the Palliative Care Research Cooperative is an honor, and I am excited to begin our work,” Gazaway said. “Creating community informed, early decision-making programs targeted at chronic kidney disease patients and their caregivers, especially those who live in underserved communities, is critical to empowering these dyads to be equal and activated partners in their clinical care.”
The study will last for 12 months. The pilot grants focused on generating data for and encouraging future palliative care studies.
